7124 Keneperu Rd., Keneperu Sound, , Marlborough, 7282, New Zealand
A grand old lodge that’s been given a thorough overhaul to bring it into the modern world overlooks the forest-covered hills and the tree-lined waterfront. Visiting boaters call in for drinks and meals at the Raetihi Restaurant or snacks in the lounge and bar, but generally you’ll be left in peace here. If relaxing on the veranda gets too tiresome, try a spurt on a paddleboard, kayak, or mountain bike, or try your luck with a rod—all are complimentary for guests. Getting here is half the fun; the drive is long and winding (two hours from Havelock). Alternatively, for a small fee, they’ll send the water taxi across to pick you up from Te Mahia jetty, just 45 minutes’ drive from Havelock. Water taxi and road transfers are also feasible direct from Picton, or you can book a helicopter or float plane.
