Fodor's Expert Review Mudbrick Lodge
Rimu Gully Road near Rai Valley, Havelock, Marlborough, 7194, New Zealand
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
The winding road that leads to Mudbrick Lodge sets the mood for this adorable, welcoming spot. Log fires, soft linens and good country food all feed the senses while just out the window the rugged Marlborough landscape seems like the edge of the world. Experienced hunting and fishing guides can take you to quiet trout pools, deserted islands, and sunny fishing spots and there's horseback riding and kayaking nearby. The suites are self-catering; breakfast ingredients are delivered for the first morning, and dinner materials are available for you to cook your own.
PROS
- a real rural NZ experience
- just over the hill from the magical Marlborough Sounds, take a boat cruise from Tennyson Inlet while you're there
- pantries are stocked with basic kitchen items
CONS
- a bit off the beaten-track, but that's also part of its charm
