Fodor's Expert Review The Sherwood

554 Frankton Rd., Queenstown, Otago, 9300, New Zealand

Starting life in the 1980s as a mid-range motor inn, Sherwood has had a startling rebirth as one of the funkiest places to stay in Queenstown, with guest rooms furnished darkly in a retro industrial style. You're also encouraged to move the furniture around at will. The real reason to stay here, however, is the social element. Locals and guests hang out in the bar and restaurant on site, where staff grow their own vegetables, and there's a good chance you'll get live music in the evening. Otherwise, book a yoga class or do a few laps on their BMX track. Some of the '80s fittings remain, but only the ones with the most character.

PROS

  • sociable bar and great restaurant
  • activities such as yoga and a BMX track on-site

CONS
