Fodor's Expert Review The Hermitage Hotel
Terrace Rd., Aoraki Mount Cook, Canterbury, 7946, New Zealand
Famed for its stupendous mountain vistas, this rambling hotel has been substantially revamped over the past few years, and the improved layout now gives most of the rooms, as well as the lobby, views over Aoraki or Mt. Sefton. However, you can expect to pay more than double for the top-tier rooms with the best views. The Hermitage is also home to The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, a tribute to one of the most famous New Zealanders, which also houses a planetarium and 3-D theater showing mountain and nature films–-perfect for when the clouds roll over. In summer there are also self-contained chalets separate from the main lodge. The views aren't as spectacular, but the prices and space are good for families. The Hermitage Hotel houses two restaurants. As the name suggests, the Panorama Restaurant takes in the scenery, too. Its menu leans toward both the Pacific Rim and Europe. The Alpine Restaurant serves a huge buffet-style meal for lunch and dinner.
- staff treat the property like home, and guests like family
- summers can get very busy with tour groups
- the best rooms get quite expensive
