Fodor's Expert Review The Summer House
424 Kerikeri Rd., Kerikeri, Northland, 0294, New Zealand
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Hosts Christine and Rod Brown come from artistic families, a background that infuses this B&B. The downstairs room, slightly detached from the house, is done in a South Pacific style. It has the most space, a kitchenette, and a higher room rate. The two upstairs rooms in the main house share a guest lounge. One room has an 1860 French bed with furniture to match, and the other has a Victorian brass bedstead. Christine's breakfasts are wonderful, including freshly squeezed juice and fresh or poached fruits—all from the 2½ acres of citrus orchards on the property—and Greek yogurt, homemade muesli, jams and marmalade, and free-range eggs cooked as requested. The landscaped subtropical garden surrounding the house attracts native birds, doves, and monarch butterflies.
