Fodor's Expert Review Albert Park
These 15 acres of formal gardens, fountains, and statue- and sculpture-studded lawns are a favorite for Aucklanders, who pour out of nearby office buildings, and two adjacent universities to eat lunch and lounge under trees on sunny days. Good cafés at the universities serve well-priced take-out food and coffee. The park is built on the site of an 1840s–50s garrison, which protected settlers from neighboring Māori tribes. On the park's east side, behind Auckland University's general library are remnants of stone walls with rifle slits. In late February the park is home to the Auckland Lantern Festival, organized by the Asian community, which celebrates Chinese New Year with lantern lightings and stalls selling authentic Asian food from 5 to 10:30 pm daily.
