Fodor's Expert Review Bethells Beach Cottages

267 Bethells Rd., Te Henga (Bethells Beach), Auckland, 0653, New Zealand

Surrounded by pohutukawa trees and overlooking one of West Auckland's beautiful rugged beaches, these two cottages plus an apartment offer a true Kiwi bach (rustic beach house) experience. From the conservatory in Turehu Cottage—a converted brick farm building that sleeps two and a child—you can watch the sun set over the ocean, or you can wander out onto the patio and fire up the barbecue. Te Koinga, the larger of the two, sleeps two couples or a family, and has a deck furnished with a large driftwood table. The view is good from the long dining table inside, too. Both cottages are self-contained, but owner Trude prepares meals by arrangement. A short stroll through the dunes leads to the patrolled beach. It is popular so book well in advance.
