You can rent bikes and cars in Mataura. The coastal road around the island is beautiful, peaceful, and easy to negotiate on foot or bike. Mt. Taita, also known as "the sleeping man," is the best destination for a gentle mountain hike.

The lagoon beaches are clean and safe. Picnic trips are offered across the lagoon to a number of islets on the reef. Largely untouched by the outside world, the islets give a taste of incredible isolation. Wilson Doom rents out his 24-foot boat for full- or half-day island tours or picnics on a motu.

For the adventurous, Tubuai is on the extreme international surfing route, but this is an activity for the skilled rather than the beginner since the best waves are to be found on the ocean side of the barrier reef.
