Fodor's Expert Review InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa

Bora Bora, Leeward Islands, French Polynesia

This beautiful and innovative resort features virtually all overwater bungalows, except for three two-bedroom family villas on the beachfront. It's the first in the Southern Hemisphere with a Thalasso spa, which uses deep seawater and seaweed in a long menu of therapeutic treatments. Another unique feature is the charming wedding chapel (the only resort chapel in French Polynesia) complete with a glass aisle—you can see coral and fish below—that the happy couple walks on from the door to the altar. The resort has adopted several energy-saving practices including using seawater pumped from 2,500 feet (762 meters) below to cool the air-conditioning system. The beds in each bungalow are situated right in front of floor-to-ceiling windows so you wake up with a view. Decor includes Paul Gauguin prints and Polynesian artworks. A free shuttle runs between the motu and the sister property, the InterContinental Moana Resort, at Matira Point.
