Fodor's Review

Handmade mudbricks, recycled timbers, and stained-glass windows point to the origins of this family-owned and built winery. A few miles from Dunsborough you'll find a friendly welcome, huge range of wines to taste (33 at last reckoning) and an eclectic gallery of locally made products in the same building. Erl Happ began his pottery business in 1970 and planted his first vines eight years later, going against local wisdom by planting Merlot. Later, a second vineyard, with 31 varieties of grape, was established near Karridale some 90 km (55 miles) to the south, its wines produced under the Three Hills label. Free tastings allow you to try some wines only available at the cellar door, such as Fuchsia and preservative-free wines. His wife Roslyn has created a much photographed garden courtyard. To see the pottery created by Erl's son Myles), travel to nearby Happs Pottery (749 Caves Road, Anniebrook), where works are for sale and, if you're game, you can get your hands dirty during a pottery class.
