Fodor's Expert Review Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat

1 South Coast Rd., Flinders Chase National Park, South Australia, 5223, Australia

With wallabies and possums treating the grounds as their own domain, this eco-friendly retreat is everything a wildlife-loving traveler could want. Rooms in the low-slung log courtyard buildings have recycled Oregon pine furniture; private rear decks in the two corner suites open onto thick banksia scrub. Family-friendly one-bed apartments and motel-style rooms share the barnlike lodge. All accommodations are simple rather than luxurious (despite the reasonably hefty tariff), but comfortable and functional. Rain is the only water source, and showers are solar heated. The dining room serves Modern Australian fare that uses many island products, including free-range meats and freshly caught fish; the kitchen also offers buffet breakfast and can prepare picnic lunches upon request.

The gas pump here is the last one for 35 km (21 miles).
