Fodor's Expert Review Heroines Monument

Phuket Town Memorial/Monument/Tomb

Several miles north of Phuket Town, dominating a major crossroads, is the Heroines Monument, a tribute to a pair of women who rallied the locals and repelled Burmese invaders in 1785. At the time, Phuket was without a leader after the governor's death and the Burmese tried to capitalize on this moment of weakness. The governor's wife and her sister persuaded all the town women to dress as men and pretend to bear arms against the Burmese. They didn't really fight, but the Burmese believed them to be a powerful army, so they retreated. The people of Phuket hold these two women in great esteem. Some stories, however, differ, having the two women actually fighting.
