Fodor's Expert Review Caoutchouc
At the end of a small dirt road, and barely above sea level, is Caoutchouc, run by its French owner and his chef partner. The café-restaurant is in a wooden, traditional house with high ceilings from which colorful Chinese lanterns hang, swaying in the sea breeze. You can sit inside or choose to relax on the scenic wraparound terrace at the water's edge, taking in beautiful views of the horizon. The chef is a Thai sea gypsy whose highly sophisticated culinary vision and style differs in subtle but also pronounced ways from the standard southern fare. He has a love of fresh products, particularly fish, and lovingly cooks what is in season or accessible that day, so don't expect a menu. As it is off the beaten track and less busy in the evenings, the restaurant only stays open if it receives reservations.
