Fodor's Expert Review Siam Kempinski

991/9 Rama I Rd., Bangkok, 10330, Thailand See on Map

An urban oasis, the Siam Kempinski is an ultra-lux property that makes you feel like you’re in a different world, far removed from the chaos of Bangkok. This palatial hotel is bathed in white and glistens around every corner. Inside, there are award-winning restaurants, a resort-like pool, glorious spa, and direct access to chichi shopping complex Siam Paragon. Ideal for high-end travelers and families with no budget restrictions, the Siam Kempinski is a service oriented spot that does everything right.

This is one of the very-few pet-friendly hotels in the city in case you need to bring your furry friends on vacation with you.

room

There are a variety of room options, but the most coveted are the 11 rooms that sit on top of the pool--literally. Standard accommodations typically have hardwood floors with area rugs, plush walls, and vintage Thai paintings. Every room comes with complimentary water, tea, coffee, and fruit changed daily.

Guess what? The mini-bar is free! That actually includes one Chang beer. But only one. Don’t get greedy.

bathroom

Bathrooms are awash in marble and have separate showers and large, standalone tubs. Bath products are by Bergamot.

lobby

The jaw-dropping lobby has polished marble floors, dueling spiral staircases, soaring ceilings and ornate pillars. There’s a small bar that serves coffee, tea, and pastries throughout the day.

pool

The hotel’s two towers surround the four pools that are connected via a series of concrete walkways and decorated with tall, lush trees. Different sections are ideal for adults and kids. The Rotunda is a teak-wood bar that services guests with sumptuous bites and cocktails throughout the day.

If you want a massage outside, there's a special area that's cordoned off and shaded for relaxing treatments.

spa

Like most things at the hotel, the spa is a luxury treat with eight separate rooms for facials, massages, body wraps, scrubs, nails, and waxings.

gym

Open 24/7, the Fitness Centre has a variety of free weights and TechnoGym cardio equipment with views of the pool. Classes here are complimentary and include yoga, Thai boxing, aerobics, and more. There’s also a great locker room with a Jacuzzi, steam, and sauna.

The hotel has a great kids club. As long as they’re between the ages of 3-12, you can literally drop them off and leave them with caretakers. The club has an entire play room with tons of activities like arts & crafts, dance competitions, and cooking classes.

dining

Known around the city for its excellence in food, there are great restaurants throughout the hotel. The two best are undoubtedly Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, an innovative Thai restaurant that’s consistently rated in the top 50 in Asia, and Niche, an international cuisine spot with dining areas both inside and out by the pool.

drinking

Hanuman Bar is in the lobby and by day serves up tea, coffee, and pastries. By night, it becomes a chill bar with incredible craft cocktails. Just off to the side is 1897 bar, which is a private lounge for cigar smokers.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Walking through the Siam Paragon mall will lead you directly to the Siam BTS Skytrain station. From there, you can get to almost any part of the city in a jiff. Walking around Siam is also great, with access to anything you could want or need. If you don’t feel like hoofing it, the hotel also offers a shuttle to the Skytrain.

Restaurants

It’s a little tricky to find, but try to get to Som Tam Nua (6-minute walk), a Thai restaurant with a papaya salad that’s out of this world. If you’re hankering for sushi, you can’t go wrong with Yellow Tail Sushi Bar (11-minute walk).

Bars

Red Sky (5-minute walk) is a stunning rooftop bar with great cocktails and insane city views. If you want a wild night, head over to the Hard Rock Café (8-minute walk), every evening there’s a live band and a raucous crowd.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The Siam Kempinski feels like an island paradise, only right outside the door is a bustling city with great bars, restaurants, and shopping. Within the white-walled palace are insanely good restaurants, a cool cigar bar, chic spa, and great resort pool. You’d be hard-pressed to find better service and the Les Clefs d’Or certified concierge can get you anything you ask for. Perfect for families or business travelers, this hotel should be at the top of any high-end wanderers list.
