You’d be excused for missing this tiny hotel tucked away on Suriwongse Road--and that’s kind of the point. With only 26 rooms, the hotel seems to pride itself on being the anti-hotel of Bangkok and embraces its size, service, and solitude. There are few frills, but the rooms are all designed with personal touches and cater to families who might need longer term stays.
Each room features individual design touches, but most come with hardwood floors, and simple, inexpensive furnishings. Swan-shaped towels greet guests on the plush beds and flat screen TVs are flush on the walls. Suites come with kitchenettes and separate living rooms that are ideal for families.
Bathrooms run on the small size with raised, white porcelain sinks and subway tiled showers. You won’t find any bathtubs here.
Not much to speak of, the small space has a reception desk and a sitting area that doubles as the hotel’s Thai restaurant.
The lobby restaurant serves incredibly authentic Thai food for breakfast. We’d recommend venturing out in the neighborhood for more variety.
La Residence is on a quiet street in a typically not-so-quiet part of town. Guests will appreciate it’s slightly off the beaten track nature--yet still close enough to walk to great restaurants, bars, and markets. The area is very walkable but you might want to have the staff write down the address and directions to the hotel for any cab drivers (they won’t know where to go). The nearest BTS Skytrain station is a 9-minute walk away, but that can take you to all parts of the city.
Just down the street is world-famous chef Joel Robuchon’s epic French restaurant L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon (8-minute walk). If you want some of the best Italian food in the city, head down to Sensi (9-minute drive).
Unbeatable cocktails can be found at Vesper Cocktail Bar & Restaurant (10-minute walk). For a classic Irish pub experience, head over to Molly Malone Irish Pub & Restaurant (10-minute walk) and feast on fried food and tall pints.
WHY WE LIKE IT
This hotel is great because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. La Residence is a small boutique hotel at a reasonable price that offers charm, service, and solitude from the chaos of the city. It’s hidden away on a quiet street, but it’s also within walking distance of bars, restaurants, and shopping. Rooms are clean with unique design touches and are perfect for families or solo travelers who don’t want to be bothered with the trappings of a corporate-branded hotel.
