Fodor's Expert Review Pakxan and Nearby

South Along the Mekong Town/Village

A Mekong River port and former French colonial outpost, this town 150 km (93 miles) south of Vientiane is now the center of the Lao Christian community. About 43 km (26 miles) south of Pakxan, Highway 13 crosses the Nam Kading River, for which the National Biodiversity Conservation Area Nam Kading, a protected forest, is named. About 90 km (56 miles) south of Pakxan, Highway 13 meets Highway 8, which leads via Lak Sao to Nam Pho on the Vietnamese border. (If you want to get to the Plain of Jars from Pakxan, a good paved road winds north from here to Phonsavan, an eight-hour bus ride away.)
