Ryokan Mikawaya Honten

1–30–12 Asakusa, Tokyo, 111-0032, Japan

This perfectly located ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) sits in the heart of Asakusa and gives guests a front row seat to a bygone era. Here you’ll find authentic living within a stone’s throw to major shrines, elongated shopping streets, and epic temples.

room

Rooms here are decked out with tatami mats and rolled up futons. They’re a bit on the small and cramped side, but you’ll still find small TVs, tea kettles, yukata pajamas, and slippers.

bathroom

Cramped bathrooms come with a variety of amenities like toothbrushes and razors. You’ll discover tiny bathtubs that are built for half a person.

lobby

The lobby area has a single wooden table and a bevy of travel brochures and pamphlets. There’s a vending machine on the first floor in case you want to grab a Pocari Sweat in the middle of the night.

dining

The Japanese breakfast is worth a whirl, but you’re still better off venturing outside for more tasty treats.

drinking

The ryokan provides free coffee and tea.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Asakusa is an ideal neighborhood for walking and the ryokan is practically next door to all major attractions in addition to restaurants, bars, and shopping. The subway is also around the corner, making life easy for getting around town.

Restaurants

If you’re a fan of okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake), then you’ll salivate over the derivation at Edo Monja Hyotan (1-minute walk). Want to try some of the best unagi (eel) in Tokyo? Head over to Oyanagi (1-minute walk) which is famous for this delicacy.

Bars

Check out the sake tasting happy hour at Wired Hotel (3-minute walk) where you’ll find some of the best sake selections in town. If whiskey is more your style, don’t miss out on Samboa (3-minute) which is known to be one of the best whiskey bars in the city.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The ryokan itself doesn’t offer much in amenities, but it more than makes up for it in location. You can’t get much closer to the major shopping, eating, and sightseeing in Asakusa. But if you’re looking for a reasonably priced authentic ryokan experience, you’ll find it at Mikawaya.
