Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Gracery Shinjuku

1–19–1 Kabukicho, Tokyo, Tokyo-to, 160-0021, Japan

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

Paying tribute to Godzilla with a location in the center of the city, the Gracery is a good choice for tourists who want to get up close to the screen's top monster. Among the 970 rooms, which tend to be on the small side, one special accommodation features a replica of the rubber suit, movie posters and a giant claw emerging from behind the headboard. Outside the eighth-floor lobby is a terrace with a "life-size" head of the Toho star that is visible from the street. A word of warning: The hotel itself is clean and the staff friendly, but the red-light district is just around the corner.

PROS

  • convenient to Shinjuku Station
  • easy access to bars and restaurants
  • affordable

CONS

  • the area is noisy with construction during the day and crowds at night
  • kitsch might not appeal to everyone
  • rooms on small side
