Train Travel

Getting to Shikoku by train usually requires transferring in Okayama to a Shikoku-bound express train. Another option is the JR Sunrise Seto sleeper train from Tokyo to Takamatsu. Shikoku is belted by a single-rail track with branches into the interior. Because there is just a single track in most places, expect irregular schedules and long waits for local trains as express ones hurtle by. The Japan Rail Pass is good on all normal and express trains. Some train lines on Shikoku (mostly in rural Kochi) are not owned by Japan Railways, so you will have to pay a small extra fee to use your Japan Rail Pass on these lines. A ¥16,140 Shikoku Free Kippu ticket is good for three days of unlimited train use. In the month of your birthday you can purchase a ¥10,280 Birthday Ticket good for three days of unlimited travel for you and up to three companions. Shikoku is the rare place in Japan where a Japan Rail Pass may not save you money; price out your trip carefully to determine if the pass is worth it.
