Fodor's Expert Review Kerala Cafe

$ Varanasi Indian

As the name implies, South Indian food is on the short menu at this no-frills, popular little diner that's lined with narrow, dingy booths and filled with mostly Indian pilgrims. The specialty is dosas—specifically masala dosas—and they're terrific, full of juicy chunks of potatoes, onion, and peas. In addition to choices like plain, tomato, or coconut uttapams (Indian-style pancakes), idlis (steamed bread made of rice flour), and vadas (deep-fried savory "doughnuts"), there's a great lemon rice with peanuts and a sprinkling of coriander leaves, and beautiful puffy pooris (fried bread) as big as your head. It's open for breakfast.
