Fodor's Expert Review Mandir Palace
Gandhi Chowk, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, 345001, India
Like something out of a fairy tale, this rambling 200-year-old palace-hotel at Gandhi Chowk has a breathtakingly beautiful carved exterior that incorporates turrets, arched doorways, windows, and balconies. Its wedding-cake-looking Badal Vilas is the tallest structure outside the fort and includes the Tazia Tower, a delicate five-tier pagoda carved by Muslim craftsmen; each tier has an intricately carved balcony. Owned by a branch of the royal family of Jaisalmer, its interiors continue the symphony in stone. Accommmodation is offered in rooms that are neat, very clean, and comfortable but neither luxurious nor memorable.
PROS
- in the center of town near the better restaurants
- authentic ambience
- nice pool
CONS
- rooms do not reflect the character and heritage of the place
