Fodor's Expert Review Brys Fort

Hotel Complex, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, 345001, India

Created to look like a faux fort, Brys tends to verge more toward back-lot film-set fantasy than historical accuracy, but it's a brave effort; the lobby is graced with large marble elephants, peacock murals, and chandeliers, and the atmosphere is regal. Rooms are spacious with large photographs of Jaisalmer and window seats; attached bathrooms are in yellow sandstone. As you enter Jaisalmer from the highway, coming from Jodhpur, you pass the sprawling Indian Army base and shortly beyond that is the Hotel Complex.

PROS

  • one of the city's better hotels
  • attached restaurant Dasta Khana offers good meals if a little pricey
  • one of the city's better hotels

CONS

  • far from the center of the town (3 km [2 miles]) in an odd hotel-dominated area
