Fodor's Expert Review Zain's Hotel Restaurant

$ Calicut Indian

This brightly painted former house near the beach is the place to go to for authentic Moplah (Kerala Muslim) dishes—it's one of Calicut's most popular restaurants. The family that owns it not only prepares dishes using family recipes passed down through the generations, but also creates innovative fusion dishes. With plastic chairs and tables laid out both indoors and outdoors, this is a no-fuss dining experience. The owner-chef, Zainabi Noor Mohammed, and her daughter Sherin Mustafa are usually there and are very hospitable. Head here for the biryani, unnakkaya (a sweet, banana- and coconut-based snack), mussel pie, and the different types of pathiri (North Kerala stuffed flat breads).
