Fodor's Expert Review Vivanta by Taj–Kumarakom
Kumarakom, Kerala, 686563, India
The main building of this tranquil, verdant resort is an 1891 plantation house, set among rubber trees, built by the son of an English missionary. Guest quarters are in brightly colored detached cottages. The large, elegant rooms open onto broad verandas and overlook a small lagoon, softly lit in the evenings, where you can canoe or pedal-boat. The terrace is a lovely place to relax with a glass of lime juice. Twelve of the cottages have views of Vembanad Lake, which is a short boat ride away down a woodsy canal. The Taj also organizes pricey excursions in houseboats.
PROS

- excellent seafood restaurant
- nice pool-facing gym
- rooms have big tubs
- plenty of activities for children
CONS
- not as carefully maintained as other Taj properties
- pricey
- very little lakefront or backwaters view
- staff can be slightly indifferent
