Fodor's Expert Review The Leela Kovalam
Beach Rd., Kovalam, Kerala, 695527, India
The best-sited property in Kovalam is one of the most luxurious and the largest, too. The main block, designed by one of India's most famous architects, Charles Correa, is built in tiers on a bluff overlooking the Arabian Sea; the enormous lobby, with a sloping roof, is lit by massive skylights. All rooms are large and have balconies and at least a partial sea view; beachfront chalets also have tiny private compounds and windowed bathrooms. Views of the sunsets are spectacular here. In the "private club" wing, guests pay a premium for the exclusive restaurant, spa, and swimming pool. You are best off selecting a room high up on the hill with a sea view. Golf carts take you around the property and there is a selection of four restaurants and bars to choose from.
PROS
- spectacular views
- private beach area
- lovely pool
- good ayurvedic center
CONS
- pricey
- large and slightly impersonal
- getting to the bars and restaurants on Lighthouse Beach is a bit of a walk
