Fodor's Expert Review Poovar Island Resort

K.P. VII/911, Poovar, Kerala, 695513, India

A speedboat ride up a sluggish backwater canal, through lots of eye-catching emerald scenery, brings you suddenly into a vast world of blue and white—ocean, spray, white waves, and sparkling beach—and to this resort, which is near the town of Poovar (100 km [62 miles] south of Quilon and 16 km [10 miles] south of Kovalam). The 16 unsual floating wooden cottage here, loosely moored to a dock, face both the Kuttanad (backwaters) and the sea—these are the ones to book. In monsoon the cottages bob more vigorously (though not enough to make you seasick), and the waves crash against them, making the experience even more surreal. These tiny cottages have thatched roofs, cozy Kerala-style interiors, mosaic-tiled bathrooms, and balconies looking out onto the water. The property also has an army of less-expensive landlocked cottages painted in earthy colors.
