Fodor's Expert Review Fernando's Nostalgia
In the tranquil, slow-paced old village of Raia you'll find one of the best restaurants in the state. If you sit at certain tables you can catch glimpses of household life in the late chef Fernando's country house. Now run by his wife, the restaurant serves classic Goan and Portugese-Goan dishes, such as salted ox tongue, fofos (fish cutlets mixed with mashed potatoes and spices, rolled in breadcrumbs and egg, and shallow-fried), sopa de bretalha (spinach soup), and prawn almondegas (prawn cutlets), which are rarely found in restaurants; that probably explains why Nostalgia is where many Goans go. The restaurant comes to life in the evening, when the alcohol begins to flow and the band starts to play (Thursday through Sunday).
