InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin

118 Ruijin Er Lu, Shanghai, Shanghai Shi, 200020, China

Formerly the Morris Estate, the preserved villas here showcases how opulently tai-pan (expatriate millionaire businessmen) lived in Shanghai's 1920s and 30s. After 1949, when it was a government-owned guesthouse, Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Richard Nixon all slept here. After being taken over by Intercontinental, the original villas have been beautifully restored and two new buildings added. Rooms, furnished with plush beds, flat-screen TVs, and cozy reading areas, are lovely, with Art Deco–inspired decor that transports you right back to Old Shanghai's heyday. Large, safely fenced-in grounds and an indoor pool make this a good option for families.
