  • 1. Beijing Pedestrian Road

Beijing Pedestrian Road offers an interesting contrast to Shangxiajiu. While Shangxiajiu is lined with new stores in old buildings, Beijing Road makes no pretense at being anything other than a fully modern, neon-draped pedestrian mall, similar to Beijing's Wangfujing Street or Shanghai's East Nanjing Road. Pedestrianized and open from around 10 am until 10 pm, this is where city teenagers buy mid-range Hong Kong-style clothes and increasingly garish local brands. Noisy and fun, the street is lined with cheap food stalls, cafés, and fast-food chains.

  • 2. CITIC City Plaza

Constantly adding new stores, this upscale shopping has more than 100 big brand shops, including Japanese department stores Seibu and Jusco. There's also a food court on the lower level that's not a bad place to take a break over some coffee or a bowl of noodle soup. The pedestrian square outside comes alive at night, with a smattering of bars and eateries for all types.

  • 3. Dongmen Shopping Plaza

    Luohu District

This sprawling pedestrian plaza has large shopping centers for inexpensive knock-off name-brand watches, shoes, bags, cosmetics, and clothes, as well as plenty of smaller outdoor shops. If you're into people-watching, grab a cup of bubble tea and soak up the sights. Watch your pockets and bags, as this place can get crowded.

  • 4. Fangsuo Commune

    Tianhe

Bookstores in China have come a long way, and now cater to the artsy and intellectual set. Located in the upscale TaiKoo Hui Mall, this bookstore offers a lot of open space, and a modish coffee bar where you can easily hook up with a laptop and latte.

  • 5. Grandview Mall

    Tianhe

  • 6. Haizhu Wholesale Market

Haizhu Plaza is a massive flea and souvenir market where casual shoppers and wholesale buyers alike bargain for kitsch—think toys, faux antiques, and Cultural Revolution–themed knickknacks. Merchants keep calculators at hand for entering figures in the heat of negotiation, and vendors sell a variety of snacks from carts located by the exits.

  • 8. Luohu Commercial City

Luohu Commercial City is a stalwart of Shenzhen's mixed-bag shopping. Its location (straddling the Hong Kong–Shenzhen border) makes it a good place to do last-minute shopping for pirated DVDs, and knockoffs of just about any name brand you can think of. On the third and fourth floors, there are some inexpensive places to get clothes tailored (store owners can mail items to you) and curtains made. It's a colorful and chaotic experience, one that is true to Shenzhen, but do be warned that here are some of the most aggressive touts you're likely to find in the city.

  • 9. Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Road

Shangxiajiu, officially known as Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Road, is a massive warren of old buildings and shops and considered the user-friendly heart of Old Guangzhou, otherwise known as "Xiguan." The half-mile main street is a pedestrian mall lined with hundreds of shops and department stores. The buildings in Shangxiajiu are old, but the stores are the same ones as in "modern Guangzhou." Even though the overall decibel level hovers around deafening, the area isn't without its charms. Our favorite shops are the small storefronts offering dried-fruit samples, which are very addictive. There's also a wide variety of street stalls selling a large selection of delicious edibles.

  • 10. TaiKoo Hui

    Tianhe

Housing more than 180 brands—both big names and new boutiques—TaiKoo Hui is one of the most sophisticated shopping experiences in Guangzhou. Look for bookstore Fang Suo, which is a great place to sit down with your laptop. The Food Garden on the third floor is also a relaxing place to grab a bite outdoors. There are a number of eateries on the mezzanine level, including the likes of Din Tai Fung, Jade Garden, and Kee Wah Bakery.

  • 11. The MixC

    Luohu District

Connected to the Grand Hyatt, this high-end shopping mall houses a long list of luxury brands, including Cartier, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Armani, and Burberry. Should you need a break, the pleasant outdoor plaza is home to a smattering of popular cafés and bars.

  • 12. Zhanxi Clothing Wholesale Market

At this wholesale market you can get bargains on upmarket jeans and many other kinds of casual clothing. Sellers are not as aggressive as in Beijing, however, they usually only accept orders of 100 items or more. Even if you don't need quite that many Lacoste polos, it's great fun to poke around.
