The Mercer

29 Jervois St., Hong Kong, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong

This tall, narrow tower in the densely packed neighborhood of Sheung Wan may not look a lot from the exterior but beyond the building—that we’re not judging—a neat collection of boutique, serviced studios are a great option for couples and families.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Amenities are not the top priority at the hotel, whose emphasis is placed on comfort and independence for guests.

room

Slick, stylish rooms offer a modern apartment home from home. The hotel has three different room types heavily weighted towards the Executive Studio (making up around 80% of accommodations) which comes with a large living area and kitchenette.

bathroom

Most guests would be happy for their own home’s bathroom to resemble the sleek en suites here with separate bathtub and walk-in shower.

lobby

A compact lobby lounge welcomes guests but with only 55 rooms, a simple check-in desk is all that’s required

gym

Amenities may be slim on ground at The Mercer but the hotel has you covered for a full workout with its well-equipped 24-hour gym.

dining

Guests can make use of the kitchenettes or enjoy a basic continental breakfast in the hotel’s small dining room.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Sheung Wan is one of those central neighborhoods where old and new Hong Kong rub shoulders. Walk the neighborhood and explore streets packed with medicine shops, dried seafood and antiques, and catch a classic tram—better yet, book tickets for the open top tram tour that departs Sheung Wan. Take the MTR from Sheung Wan to head across the island and onto Kowloon side.

Restaurants

Follow the cool crowd and eat amazing, creative Thai food at Chachawan (8-minute walk) on Hollywood Road. Follow the local crowd and eat amazing beef flank noodle soup at Kau Kee (5-minute walk) but be prepared to wait in line.

Bars

Slip out of the hotel for a stiff drink at the nearby whisky bar, Nocturne Wine and Whisky Bar (7-minute walk), a bar with bottles on bottles of the best blends and single malts around. For speakeasy fun, Mrs Pound (9-minute walk) is the best. A bar and restaurant disguised behind the exterior of a classic HK stamp shop: what could be more fun than that?

WHY WE LIKE IT

We love the Sheung Wan neighborhood, the sleek design of the rooms and the considered bathrooms. The kitchenettes at The Mercer are an important detail and one that many guests will feel makes up for the lack of amenities.
