Over the mountains on the south side of the island away from the skyscraping blocks and relentless city streets, Ovolo Southside is a good option for visitors who appreciate some distance from the heart of Hong Kong, as well as a property with an artsy vibe. A hotel that flirts with the style and handy amenities of an upmarket hostel (think free laundry facilities) while landing just on the right side of boutique hotel, Ovolo Southside is a great choice, especially for families and younger travellers.
Thanks to the South Island line, Admiralty is under ten minutes on the MTR from Wong Chuk Hang.
Housed within a utilitarian industrial block, the décor of the rooms embraces the building’s look, allowing exposed pipework and fittings to act as decoration. Rooms are on the small side however, and the lack of a false ceiling to cover the exposed pipes and wires creates an illusion of space thanks to the increased height. Mini bars are free (think beers, sodas, nuts etc.) and are replenished daily, which is a welcome touch.
Friends and family rooms are a great option for parents with children or couples who don’t mind sharing. However, noise travels readily from the floor above which is a minor irritant.
Tiny bathrooms live behind sliding doors and contain high-powered, walk-in showers. Toiletries are generously replenished and the industrial chic look distracts from the lack of space.
After the elevator trip from the dark, ground floor entrance, the lobby is a welcome sight. The hotel’s inherently artistic style is apparent here and the relaxed, informal attitude of the staff makes for a good start.
A spacious gym is well-equipped with free weights, cardio machines and a solid punch bag.
Informal dining in the Komune restaurant is a pleasure. Western comfort food meets South American concoctions with the odd elements of Asian style thrown in for good measure. The breakfast buffet is worth getting up for.
Views from the rooftop bar, Above Komune make the trip to the top worth taking. Enjoy cocktails, craft beers with the sight of mountains towering on the horizon.
Guests who book through the Ovolo website enjoy a two hour daily happy hour during which beer and prosecco are free.
Thanks to the South Island line this side of Hong Kong island no longer feels so separate from the city—you can be in Admiralty in under ten minutes on the MTR. While you’re on the south of the island, make time to visit Repulse Bay, Stanley Market and South Bay Beach.
The scene here is nothing like those of the neighborhoods located on the other side of the island, which means choices are fewer. However, close to the hotel there’s Pizza Express (5-minute walk) for trusted—if not the most inspiring—pizza and pasta, as well as the hip, Sensory Zero (5-minute walk), or Chopsticks Fork and Knife (7-minute walk) for contemporary Western bites.
Drink barrel fresh craft beer at Young Master Brewery (8-minute walk) or head for Black Kite Brewery (7-minute walk) and sample a signature golden ale.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Ovolo Southside rejects the stuffy atmosphere of its rivals on the other side of the island and opts for a fresh, laidback approach that chimes with its location close to the oasis of Repulse Bay. We loved the Komune restaurant and the overall communal vibe throughout the hotel.
