Fodor's Expert Review Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel

1 Sky City Rd. E, Hong Kong International Airport, Lantau Island, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong See on Map

Located on Lantau Island almost within the Hong Kong international Airport complex, the SkyCity Mariott Hotel is a business hotel primarily that offers the type of quality service and comfort that you would expect form a trusted brand like Marriott. While exterior views of the hotel aren’t much to look at, the interior is all smart, open-plan spaces, cozy rooms and the types of perks that you might not expect from an airport hotel.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Guests receive a complimentary shuttle service to both the airport and nearby Disneyland.

Standard rooms are reasonably spacious by Hong Kong standards, which is part of the payoff for the hotel’s location so far from the center of the city. Available in various different price points depending on the size and the view, the rooms are all neutrally decorated and feature large TVs, writing desks (for the business touch) and super soundproofed windows to keep things quiet.

Large bathrooms are decorated in a mix of dark wood and white marble and feature walk-in showers as a rule.

The vast double-height entrance lobby is filled with a sea of lounge chairs and coffee tables, making it the ideal place for guests to take a meeting outside of the city—which we suspect is kind of the point. While not lively in the excitable sense, there’s a certain buzz to the entrance thanks to the multifaceted open plan drinking/dining/meeting area.

The genuine gem of a pool is a big attraction for the Hong Kong SkyCity Mariott Hotel because who doesn’t want to slink off a flight, check-in and take a dip in an impressive pool to shake off that travel weariness? The indoor pool is part of the hotel’s fitness center, which boast a well-equipped gym open 24-hours to guests.

In a city that bustles like nearly no other, a hotel spa is more important than ever, and in an airport hotel, multiply that by two. Fortunately, the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel has an award-winning spa that offers everything from full-body massage to simple manicures.

A well-stocked gym has all you need for a full workout.

Guests can choose between the signature Man Ho restaurant and its fine Cantonese cuisine or the Velocity Bar & Grill for a more relaxed, sports bar environment. We prefer Man Ho, but when you’re done with dim sum, burgers and beers await at Velocity Bar & Grill. Looking like something partway between a restaurant and a convention centre, the SkyCity Bistro is the place to head for more formal meals.

While The Lounge could quite easily be the bar of any Marriott hotel anywhere in the world, the big windows and their views of the sea do at least provide it with a pleasing light-filled demeanour that’s a pleasure to relax in. By night you can see the lights twinkle outside as you enjoy cocktails.

Getting Around

Connected to the mainland via the North Lantau Highway, the hotel is around a 40-minute drive from Tsim Sha Tsui and the same by train. Beyond the airport, Lantau Island is well worth exploring with the Tian Tan Big Buddha and the Ngong Ping Cable Car (with its heart wrenching glass bottom) particularly worth experiencing.

Given the hotel’s close proximity to the airport, the restaurant scene is limited but being Hong kong, you can always find some dependable local cuisine. The closest spot is in the airport where Tsu Wah (20-minute walk) is a good place for Cantonese classics. Alternatively, head to another nearby airport hotel and try Olea (8-minute drive) at Novotel Citygate for Mediterranean meals and a range of tapas.

Located within the airport, the Cathay Pacific Bridge Lounge is a neat pace to both get a beer and extend your Cathay Pacific experience after getting off the plane. Or head to Moon Bar (25-minut walk) within the airport.

A dependable choice with luxurious additions here and there in the form of the pool and spa, the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel is a great choice if you either need to be near the airport during your stay or plan to be in town for Disneyland and Lantau Island excursions. There are many drawbacks to the location but since an airport hotel is what it is, we won’t deem them applicable if the center of the city is not on your radar. While the rooms hardly wow, they’re comfortable, clean and most important of all, quiet.
