Fodor's Expert Review Auberge Discovery Bay
88 Siena Ave., Discovery Bay, Lantau Island, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China See on Map
Summoning an alternative experience to that of the average Hong Kong hotel, the Auberge Discovery Bay offers a break from the buzz with its upmarket resort vibes in a location sandwiched between ocean and mountains. Situated a good distance from the center of Hong Kong in the expat-heavy enclave of Discovery Bay, guests swap the convenience and bustle of the city for the relaxed, residential beachside environment close to the airport and Disneyland.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Be aware that the Auberge Discovery Bay is very much a resort destination so if you’re looking for a hotel that puts you even remotely near the action of Hong Kong then this is not it.
room
While the swankiest hotels in Hong Kong can offer harbor views, many have only the exterior views of other high rises for company. Not so at the Auberge Discovery Bay where mountain and ocean vistas come as standard in many of the rooms in the high-rise hotel. Modern, clean décor with minimal pops of turquoise keep it neutral and allows the sights out of the floor to ceiling windows to steal the show.
Opt for a room with a view of the beach and literally wake up to the sight of the sun sparkling over the water or try to bag a corner room, whose dual sided glass walls offer incredible views of the ocean.
bathroom
While some bathrooms feature yet more outstanding views of the ocean from well-positioned windows, others offer a glimpse back into the bedrooms through a glass partition that adds a touch of intrigue to the experience.
lobby
Loose, camp collared shirts, flowing dresses, sandals and sunhats should be worn into the lobby at the Auberge Discovery Bay to match the resort’s ‘you’re on vacation!’ feel. Within the spacious lobby the eyes are naturally drawn towards the atrium’s twinkling skylight, which is the most exciting aspect of the fairly plain expanse.
pool
For when you don’t want to take yourself to the beach to swim in the open waters of the ocean, the impressive outdoor pool is the next best thing. Enjoy the ocean views as you swim laps of the large pool or enjoy a good book on one of the loungers at the water’s edge—pure resort living.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The pool is closed during winter.
spa
In the award-winning Spa Botanica guests can enjoy pampering massages, facials and a variety of other treatments in one of the luxurious private rooms that come, of course, with views that add another dose of serenity.
gym
A bright, well-equipped fitness center benefits from impressive views through floor-to-ceiling windows.
dining
The smart Café Bord de Mer is a refined restaurant that serves a western and pan-Asian menu and an impressive buffet.
drinking
Watch the big game in glorious Technicolor on one of the Bounty Entertainment and Sports Bar’s big LCD screens and sample an inventive cocktail or two.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Getting around the island means taking buses, trains or ferries for the most part as private motor vehicles are not allowed in Discovery Bay. For trips to the airport or Disneyland, the hotel can provide a shuttle for a fee. For journeys further afield, public transport is the most convenient way to travel with Tung Chung MTR a bus ride from Discovery Bay if you want to reach Hong Kong Island, or the 24-hour ferry, which takes you to Central Pier in 30 minutes (arguably the easiest way to get into the city).
Restaurants
Head to the Plaza where you’ll find a collection of restaurants such as Hemingway’s, a contemporary vegan restaurant worth visiting. Alternatively, 22 North is a spot with picturesque views to go with its western bistro menu with an emphasis on fresh seafood and tapas.
WHY WE LIKE IT
A lone resort overlooking the water in a calm, quiet residential neighbourhood, the Auberge Discovery Bay is something of a one-of-a-kind. Altogether different to the majority of the rest of Hong Kong’s hotels, the lure of the Auberge Discovery Bay is the implied vacation vibe that runs through it. For serenity and escape the hotel and its excellent spa and oversized pool are ideal, making the relative distance from central Hong Kong something not to sweat over.
