Fodor's Expert Review Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor
1 Vithei Charles de Gaulle, Siem Reap, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Built in 1932 and still featuring the cage elevator from that year in the lobby, this grande dame was restored and reopened after near destruction by occupying Khmer Rouge guerrillas. The Grand is a fine, but somewhat conceptually dated hotel and is certainly the most expensive. It combines French sensibilities and Cambodian art with Oriental carpets and wicker furniture; rooms are large and elegant, with balconies that overlook the extensive gardens and blue-tile pool.
PROS
- picturesque gardens
- excellent restaurant
- nicely designed and decorated
CONS
- somewhat dependant on their name and former glory
- more impersonal than smaller hotels
- outside the center of Siem Reap
