Fodor's Expert Review Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge
Buhoma, Western Region, Uganda
This quirkily decorated eco-lodge is on the edge of Bwindi in its own reserve of secondary forest, creating a 50-acre gorilla-friendly buffer zone between the park and the nearby village of Buhoma. Some guests have been lucky enough to observe the Rushegura group of gorillas within the lodge grounds. The eight thatched bandas, all named after local gorillas, are the epitome of shabby chic: patchwork upholstered chairs; bathroom vanity units made from recycled tin; striped kilims on the floor; and hand-sewn quilts on the beds. Each guest is entitled to a complimentary massage, conducted in a charming, though slightly chilly, cabin in the grounds. Other activities include: craft shop and orphanage visits; a tea plantation tour; and a visit to the local community hospital.
