Fodor's Expert Review Paraa Safari Lodge

North bank of the Nile, Murchison Falls National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Western Region, Uganda

This centrally located lodge, overlooking the Nile as it wends its way to Lake Albert, is popular with all those who like their creature comforts in the bush. Built in the 1950s, it's one of the more historic properties in Uganda. With more than 50 rooms, it's also a lot bigger than most, with amenities galore. A vast pool with swim-up bar is a big hit on a hot afternoon; guests in the deluxe rooms are grateful for the air-conditioning; and if you fancy hosting a business conference mid-safari, this is the place to do it. The north bank location also comes with benefits: no need to wait for the ferry crossing when you want to head out on a game drive. The lodge works hard to offset its footprint: it supports the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and nearby Paraa Primary School.

  • high level of personal comfort
  • great pool and views
  • close to game tracks

  • a far cry from the intimacy and romance of a smaller lodge
  • not all rooms have river views
