Fodor's Expert Review Plantation Lodge
Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha, Tanzania
Open spaces are at every turn here, from the hidden swimming pool to the stylish cottages with soft, earth-tone linens, accents of rich African wood, and large en suite bathrooms. The food, albeit not traditionally Tanzanian, is very good, including the freshly baked cookies and cakes scattered around the main lodge area, which are a real treat after a day’s safari. Dining is in a large public area, on your room veranda, or tucked away in a corner for an intimate experience. The bar area has outdoor seating overlooking the gardens, and make time to visit the extensive wine cellar. The lodge can arrange your daily activities, which are not included in the quoted price.
PROS

- fireplace in each room
CONS
- a bumpy drive from the crater
- Wi-Fi in main area only
- two of the rooms' bathrooms are slightly old fashioned, so be sure to request the newer ones or book in advance. Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha. 027/253–4405. www.plantation-lodge.com. 5 suites, 20 cottages. In-room: no a/c, safe, no TV.
