Fodor's Expert Review Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha, Tanzania
The best thing about this acceptable but rather shabby lodge on the eastern edge of the crater is the spectacular sunset views from the bar lounge, the dining room, the gardens, swimming pool, and some of the guest rooms. Not all the rooms have great views, however, so try for a room on the top floor in the higher numbers. Some rooms in the lower level have no view at all. Rooms are big with simple but outdated furnishings and dim lighting. Hot water is only available at certain hours, so check with the desk when you arrive. Food is of an acceptable standard, but it can be hit and miss. If you're looking for peace and quiet, stay behind and just enjoy the views, birders will particularily enjoy the lodge's forested grounds full of many different species.
PROS
- wonderful views down into the crater
- the lodge's private ascent and descent road
- which takes hours off traveling into the crater

CONS
- large lodge where the number of guests makes it noisy and impersonal
- rooms are tired and lacking in charm
