Fodor's Expert Review Mogg's Country Cookhouse
Don't be put off by the bumpy dirt road heading up the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This restaurant on a fruit farm at the top of the valley is worth any amount of dust and corrugations. The converted laborer's cottage is as pretty as a picture in a tumbledown, overgrown kind of way, and the food is excellent in a relaxed and friendly setting. The seasonal menu is scribbled on a chalkboard. For starters you could expect caramelized pear, Gorgonzola, avocado, and walnut salad, or smoked trout and sauteed prawns in a phyllo pastry basket with lime-wasabi vinaigrette. Main courses might include Moroccan-style slow-roasted lamb on potato mash with a cool yogurt dressing, or battered pork medallions with a mustard sauce and a warm green bean, olive, and potato salad. For dessert, homemade vanilla or coffee ice cream is served with a hot chocolate sauce. You're welcome to bring your own wine, and they don't charge corkage.
