Fodor's Expert Review Haute Cabrière
Try to reserve a window table for views across the vine-clad valley at this restaurant atop a working winery built into the mountainside. The mix-and-match menu is intended to complement the estate wines maturing in the cellar beneath you; the flavors are complex—these aren't the kind of dishes you could easily whip up at home. Selections might include a sweet potato soup with a chakalaka (spicy relish) and sweet potato foam, or smoked-cheese-and-tomato risoto with a nasturtium pesto; the roasted prawn broth is a popular favorite. A lot of the produce is grown on the farm or locally, and the aim is to get you to try different flavors with the wines to see which taste combinations appeal to you most. Regulars come back for the organic, sugar-cured flllet served with crispy sweetbreads. You can opt for the chef's recommended tasting menu—six delicious courses for R650, including wine—one of three different tasting menus on offer. In summer from October they have music and tapas on the terrace from 3 to 7.
