Fodor's Expert Review Camphors at Vergelegen
In summer you need to reserve a table weeks in advance at this idyllic restaurant on the Vergelegen Estate. In pleasant weather ask for a table on the terrace, shaded by liquidambar trees. With a big emphasis on fresh, free-range, ethically farmed produce, the innovative menu serves starters such as fried Saldahna oysters served with smoked avocado, elderflower yogurt, and pickled cucumber; or bone marrow and mussels with chard, seaweed, and lime marmalade. Main courses include Karoo lamb and sweetbreads, or an interesting vegetarian option of goat butter, cauliflower, and porcini arancini (Italian rice balls). A five-course tasting menu (around R585 per person) takes the agony out of having to decide. Even better, the tasting menu with wine pairing includes sublime Vergelegen wines (around R795 per person). The menu changes regularly, depending on what produce is available. If you can't get a reservation, head to the estate's Stables at Vergelegen for simpler—but equally delicious—food.
