Fodor's Expert Review The Owner's Cottage

Grand Provence, off R45, Franschhoek, Western Cape, 7690, South Africa

You know you're in good company at the Owner's Cottage on Grande Provence wine estate when the visitors' book includes Jude Law and British royals Sophie and Prince Edward. There's an understated elegance in the cottage's five rooms that are decorated in muted tones more fitting to a farmhouse than an upmarket residence. The lounge has floppable couches next to a fireplace, underfloor heating, crisp linen, and complimentary sherry and cigars. For summer there's a fantastic pool and Jacuzzi area and a summerhouse adjacent to the pool if you want some downtime during the heat of the day. The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with a full-time cook, should you want to eat in. Breakfast is served in a pretty conservatory and includes delicious freshly baked goods and a full cooked breakfast. The garden is big enough for kids to let off steam; you can call the whole estate home for the duration of your stay, and there's lots to do on the estate. If the Owner's Cottage isn't available, ask about La Provençale Cottage, which is smaller but no less comfortable.
