42 Best Hotels in The Western Cape and Winelands, South Africa

Background Illustration for Hotels

The Cape Winelands are sufficiently compact that you can make one hotel your touring base. Stellenbosch and Paarl, situated close to dozens of wineries and restaurants as well as the major highways to Cape Town, offer the most flexibility. Here bed-and-breakfasts and self-catering (with cooking facilities) options are often less expensive than hotels and provide a better taste of life in the country. Franschhoek is comparatively isolated, which many visitors consider a blessing. The West Coast, the Cederberg, and the Overberg are much more spread out, so you'll want to stay in one place for a day or two and then move on. During the peak season of December–January, book well in advance and be prepared for mandatory two-night stays on weekends. Although the winter months of June–September are usually a lot quieter and bring negotiable rates, seaside towns get really busy (and booked up) when the whales arrive to calve. The same is true up the West Coast during flower season.

The Owner's Cottage

$$$$ | off R45, Franschhoek, 7690, South Africa

You know you're in good company at the understated and elegant Owner's Cottage on Grande Provence Wine Estate when the visitors' book includes Jude Law and British royals Sophie and Prince Edward. The cottage's six rooms are decorated in muted tones more fitting to a farmhouse than an upmarket residence. The lounge has inviting couches next to a fireplace, underfloor heating, and complimentary sherry. For summer there's a fantastic pool and whirlpool tub. Breakfast is served in a pretty conservatory and includes delicious freshly baked goods and a full cooked breakfast. If the Owner's Cottage isn't available, ask about La Provençale Villa, which is smaller but no less comfortable.

Pros

  • You'll be made to feel right at home
  • Close to the action in Franschhoek
  • Lovely pool area

Cons

  • Unless you rent the whole house, you'll have to share it with other guests
  • Some people don't like the smell of thatch
  • So many on-site amenities you may never leave

Traveller's Rest

$ | Off Pakhuis Pass, Clanwilliam, 8135, South Africa

If you're on a tight budget, this farm is the place to stay. There are no frills at these basic but comfortable cottages, but the surrounding mountain scenery is spectacular. It's also where all the climbers come to hang out when they've had enough of conquering the nearby rock faces and need to beef up with a burger. The best reason to stay though, is the Sevilla Rock Art Trail, which starts at Traveller's Rest. You can take a guided tour or explore on your own with a booklet that describes all the rock art on the farm. The restaurant is open daily and has a menu of traditional dishes like bobotie, eland stew, and chicken curry.

Pros

  • Nearby rock-art route
  • Very reasonable rates
  • Cottages are self-catering

Cons

  • Wi-Fi can be hit and miss

Windsor

$ | 49 Marine Dr., Hermanus, 7200, South Africa

If you come to Hermanus anytime from July to November, consider staying at this hotel in the heart of town. It's a family-run hostelry that offers comfort but little pretense. Rooms are outdated, so the real reason to stay here is its position atop the cliffs, making it a great place to view the annual whale migration. Request one of the second-floor, sea-facing rooms, with sliding-glass doors and unbeatable views. During holidays, a games room with a pool table and table tennis is set up for older children. Breakfasts are ample.

Pros

  • World-class views of Walker Bay
  • In the heart of Hermanus
  • Reasonable rates

Cons

  • Tired decor needs a revamp
  • No pool
