Halfway House

Cecil John Rhodes used to stop for a drink at Halfway House, halfway between the Kimberley and Bultfontein mines. Because he was short and it was difficult for him to mount and dismount, he was served on his horse. Thanks to the building of a 6-foot wall to prevent people from drinking in public, this novel tradition still lives on at this Kimberley institution. You can drive into the parking lot at "the Half," honk your horn, and a waiter will appear. Today, though, most of the action is inside, where the under-30 crowd can get rowdy at night, making the most of the wide drinks selection. If you go on a drinking spree, you can even spend the night at the attached hotel, at which point no amount of noise will wake you.
