Fodor's Expert Review Apollis Cottage

Homeb 6, 20 km (12 miles) off the N2, Springbok, Northern Cape, South Africa

Remote in location 30 minutes from Springbok, this is the real deal if you want comfort and solitude with big skies in a desertlike location. Although there's an abandoned open-pit mine in the background, it oddly enough fits in with the surrounding sparse, rocky landscape. The Guest House is owner Annie’s dream realized: to open a B&B on the farmland she grew up on. If she's not on-site, her old schoolmate Herman, his wife, and their daughter look after the cottage for her—he will even point out their old corrugated-iron schoolroom in the distance. The house offers three large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, as well as a large lounge/dining room area, porch, kitchen, garden, and braai area at the back. Using a well for water as well as solar panels for electricity, it really is its own self-sufficient oasis in the desert.
