Fodor's Expert Review African Vineyard Guesthouse

Kanon-Eiland, Plot 79, Upington, Northern Cape, 1071, South Africa

Just outside Upington on Kanon-Eiland, an island in the Orange River (South Africa's largest), this luxurious and peaceful guesthouse sits among expansive vineyards, perhaps as many rows of grapes as you've ever seen. The attractive accommodations range in style from a designer warehouse loft to a cozy double room, all with a homey, warm soul. Elmarie and her local team are very welcoming and supportive of their local communities. The lovely setting encourages you to walk around the Orange River island—this is slow country, and interaction with the local community is peaceful and enlightening. The inn is a registered slow-food establishment. Breakfast is included in the rates, but a delicious dinner can also be ordered.
