The name of Isandlwana went down in British military history on January 22, 1879, when the then mighty British Empire suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the 20,000-strong Zulu army. Today, the site remains a poignant reminder, dotted with memorials to the fallen—about 1,000 Zulus and 1,329 British soldiers.
