Fodor's Expert Review Kyoto Sushi Garden
Elegant and tranquil, this understated eatery near the Kloof Street drag serves pricey but extremely well-executed Japanese fare for dinner only. Sourcing as much as possible from Japan, the owner verges on an obsession with high-quality ingredients and technique, evidenced in the lightness of the tempura and the freshness of the fish. The decor is Zen-inspired with a lot of blond wood, making for a supremely relaxing setting in which to enjoy dishes like seaweed-and-shiitake salad, crayfish miso soup, or steamed fish in a bamboo pot. What constitutes an unusually diverse range of sushi by Cape Town standards can include sea urchin, big-eye tuna, scallop, octopus, and caviar. Great cocktails, a good selection of sake and Japanese whiskey, and fine service complete the picture.
