Fodor's Expert Review Kloof Street House
Set in a fanciful garden under palm trees illuminated by strings of fairy lights, this magnificently dolled-up Victorian house on trendy Kloof Street serves a menu of Mediterranean-inspired fare with a distinctly South African twist. Expect starters like panfried Halloumi cheese with dukkah spice and honey, or baked whole Camembert with caramelized onions and cranberry jelly. The Moroccan-spiced lamb rump with tahini dressing is wonderfully flavorful, and lighter fare like the Norwegian salmon with braised fennel is perfectly cooked. Rumor has it that the house once served as a gentlemen's club, and the decor today, with its red velvet, copious candelabras, and antique lamps still channels that vibe with a wink and a nudge. Though service can sometimes be lackluster, the festive atmosphere, great cocktails, and generally tasty food make it a worthwhile stop.
