Fodor's Expert Review La Splendida
121 Beach Rd., Cape Town, Western Cape, 8005, South Africa See on Map
This small, chic seafront hotel enjoys a great location across from the popular Mouille Point promenade and is just a 20-minute walk from the V&A Waterfront. Rooms either face the sea or the mountain, and overlook the greenery of the nearby park and golf course. It also boasts a buzzing cafe and restaurant downstairs with a lovely outdoor terrace that is popular with guests and locals alike. Prices can be very competitive.
The hotel lends out bikes for free, a great way to spend a morning cycling up and down the seafront (you'll fit in with the locals too).
room
The comfortable, well-proportioned, and cleanly designed rooms are light and airy, if a little relentlessly white.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Some rooms face the sea, some the mountain. Be warned: the sea-view rooms are above the restaurant and by the road, so can be noisy. The mountain-view rooms are larger and quieter.
bathroom
Bathrooms are clean and functional, although maybe in need of a little love.
lobby
The hotel lobby is more of a desk to the side of the popular Sotano restaurant, but it is staffed by friendly personnel with good local knowledge.
dining
A great breakfast is served in the independently-run Sotano, which also offers all-day dining in a buzzing setting with an outdoor terrace that gets quite crammed in summer.
drinking
Guests can also have a drink in Sotano and enjoy the sunset views.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel is well-located for sea views and the restaurants and bars along that strip, as well as for the V&A Waterfront. It's a quick and easy drive to most other locations in Cape Town, too, particularly the CBD.
Restaurants
Try The Butcher Shop and Grill (1-minute walk) for some top-quality meat dishes, or The Hussar Grill (5-minute walk) offers similarly good steak. Alternatively, head to the V&A Waterfront for some brilliant sushi at Willoughby & Co (25-minute walk, 7-minute drive).
WHY WE LIKE IT
La Splendid is a low-key but light-filled little place just across from the lovely Mouille Point seafront promenade. It's a relaxing location and the hotel itself is cute, with a great attached restaurant and calm, plain rooms. Prices are good, too, but don't expect anything too fancy.
